Snow Day!

When we moved "back east" from California six years ago (!) one of the things I knew I would miss the most was the SoCal weather. I hate the cold. I am always cold anyway, so when it's below freezing I am just miserable. And I hate snow. Sure, it's pretty for about 10 minutes, but the second you actually have to function in the world it's not pretty anymore - especially when you live in the city. Snow means people driving like maniacs, no parking for weeks (because of the snow piled up in all the street parking) and the once pretty white snow very quickly becoming disgusting, dirty black snow.

So I think people would actually be surprised to know that I actually kind of enjoy the winter these days. No, it's not that I like the cold much more than I did before (although I do have a higher tolerance now that my blood has thickened back up to east coast temps) and it's not that I like the snow more because it is still treacherous and annoying. But what I LOVE is a snow day. And not just because it's nice to have a day off from work. Having a "bonus" day in the middle of the week where Marty and I are home with the kids is priceless in our increasingly hectic lives. Being unable to go anywhere means no running errands or rushing off to birthday parties - it means just spending the entire day hanging out with our two favorite little people.

Besides, the way children delight in snow is similar to the way they can change your perspective on Christmas. Kids love snow - and can actually make you love snow too (sort of!). They love to go sledding and build snowmen and make snow angels - probably because it's such a special and infrequent occurrence (except for last winter). It has already snowed here a couple of times this winter but we happened to be out of town for all of them. So when we had a snow day this Wednesday, we were all overjoyed. We had such a wonderful day lazing around, playing games, playing in the snow, cuddling and enjoying each others company. No rushing. No plans. Just the four of us hanging out.

Yeah, I'll take take another one of those any time. It's definitely worth the parking issues.
